Sports & Recovery Massage (SP-2)

sportsmassageNew tips and techniques for working with athletes and weekend warriors. This session focuses on the recovery phase with emphasis on hip, core and upper body work.

Overall description of workshop

This workshop is designed for massage therapists who want to add new techniques to their “sports massage toolbox” and refine techniques you may already know. You will learn how to meet the specific needs in recovery that athletes want and require. The focus of this workshop is UPPER BODY and PELVIS/CORE regions. You will leave with a good understanding of sports massage, learn more about meeting the unique needs of very active individuals, and explore how to work for professional or collegiate sports teams.

Prerequisite for this class: Be a graduate of a massage therapy program that included techniques in Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, and basic anatomy and kinesiology.

Format: Presentation, discussion, and group and individual practice time. Breaks, with coffee / tea, snacks, refreshments will be provided.

Workshop Overview

The workshop will give you tools you need to work with professional athletes or athletic clients. Specific points in the workshop include:

  • Learn new techniques for sports massage such as compressive effleurage and compressive petrissage, focused on teh upper body, and pelvis/core.
  • Learn the difference in fast-twitch, slow-twitch, and intermediate-fast twitch muscles and how to work with each
  • Learn to identify and observe signs of muscle release
  • Incorporate passive joint movement (PJM) along with Swedish strokes, stretching techniques, deep transverse friction (DTF) and deep longitudinal release (DLR)
  • Build strategies to market skills to collegiate and sports teams

The workshop consists of presentation time, exercises, group discussion and summary exercise. Breaks are built in for your comfort. WiFi is available.

What to bring: (Required):

  • Your massage table (watch for an email to confirm this! For sessions at NHI, tables will be provided so you don't need to bring them)
  • Medium (cream is preferred but oil or lotion will work)
  • Full set of sheets (bottom sheet, top sheet, face cradle cover)
  • Bolster or pillow
  • Clothing: Loosely fitting sports clothes (shorts, t-shirt, tank top, sports top). You'll be draped for any targeted work.

  • Blanket

Instructor: Curtis Hisao, CMT, BA, BBA

Curtis has more than 10 years experience teaching massage and developing massage curriculums for leading massage therapy schools. He has had his own private practice since 2003 and has been the lead massage therapist for the San Jose Earthquakes (Major League Soccer Team) since 2007. Before starting a career as massage therapist and massage therapy instructor, Curtis worked for 30 years in customer service.

Registration and Fees

Register before the early bird deadline and pay only $80. After the early bird deadline, you'll pay regular price, $100. This price includes a four-hour hands-on workshop in a small group with individual one-on-one mentoring to help you get the practice you need to start using your new techniques in your practice right away.

Payment in advance is required when you register each workshop. We accept all major credit cards through PayPal.
